Chinese fertility temple dolls family of three

Chinese fertility temple dolls family of three

£600.00

Wonderful and rare to the market Chinese fertility dolls, two families.

Sometimes assumed by Westerners as "medical models" these are Chinese fertility dolls. As ritual items, they rarely come onto the market. Used by several Chinese ethnic minority cultures, including the Miao, Yao and Naxi, old fertility dolls were hand carved, anatomically correct and with pegged and jointed limbs. The styles and head gear would vary depending on the minority group. Dolls representing the hopeful parents to be and often the son that was wished for were consecrated by the shaman and taken home from the temple. After a child was born, the child doll would be returned to the temple.

In this collection there are two families, Father, Mother and two sons in one and just the one son in the other family unit.

We are selling them as two family groups and this is the family of three
