Alexander von Moltke held a James retrospective in 2002, with work unseen in public for several decades, this wonderful panel of Adam and Eve was purchased during this gallery exhibition in early 2003. The original bill of sale will be included with the piece.
Kim James 1928-2011
Sculptor and teacher, who studied at the Borough Polytechnic, 1948–54, under David Bomberg and Tom Eckersley, and at the Royal College of Art. Took part in group exhibitions at RBA, 1959; Wildenstein, 1961; Arthur Jeffress and Grosvenor Galleries, 1963; AIA, 1963–4; and RA, 1967–9. James’ figurative-towards-abstraction pieces were given a solo exhibition at Hanover Gallery, 1966. Carried out commissions for the Churches of St Nicholas at Hayes, Middlesex, and St Matthew’s at Bethnal Green; a crucifix for the Franciscan Brothers in Dorset; and sculpture and relief work for Hoveringham Gravels Ltd, Nottingham. James gave up art in 1969, having been head of art therapy at what became the University of Hertfordshire. He retrained as a scientist and became a successful management consultant in cybernetics.
His sculptures were acquired by a number of public collections, including one in Brussels. James was born and eventually settled in Wollaston, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.
