Rare mid nineteenth century chair makers advertising chair

A superb example of an unusual and rare windsor style chair dating from the mid 19th century.

It is well publicised that any 19th Century chair maker would have a sample piece that demonstrated the quality and versatility of his work and abilities and we think this is one of those examples. It simply has too many different style and regional elements not to be so.

Probably English but also has American elements and influences, Its diminutive in size, probably 3/4 .

It has a thick square rebated seat with slender turned spindles, a fretted horizontal splat and a turned bar at the top of the arched back. Short turned arms are supported by further turned spindles. The chair stands on turned legs joined by stretchers.

It is in good original condition and is strong and sturdy with no major damage. There are signs of age and use and some marks and light scratches on the seat and around the legs but nothing detrimental. It has developed a wonderful rich patina.

Dimensions: 33 1/2" (85cm) high, the seat is 16" (41cm) deep and 17" (43cm) high. Arm to arm the chair is 17" (43cm) wide.
